Every care service has a mix of experience. Long term staff who know the service inside out, new starters who are still finding their feet and agency workers who support your service at short notice.
Problems tend to arise when less experienced staff feel thrown in the deep end, or when experienced staff feel like they are constantly carrying the load. Over time, this imbalance can lead to frustration forming on both sides.
One of the simplest ways to address this is by being intentional about support, such as, pairing new workers with a confident team member during shifts. Another important step you can take is ensuring that all staff members know who to ask when they’re unsure.
It’s also worth looking at how tasks are allocated. Experience doesn’t always mean doing everything. Sometimes it’s about guiding, overseeing and being available if and when needed.
Training plays a big part too. Regular refreshers and accessible learning opportunities help new staff have the same opportunities as experienced staff members. Especially if staff come from different backgrounds or previous roles. When everyone feels equipped to do their job confidently and safely, the whole team benefits.
Don’t forget, despite the length of time someone has been at your organisation, it doesn’t stop them from learning something new or updating their knowledge. Give your entire staff team the opportunity to continue developing their skills and knowledge to ensure they are providing the best possible care.
