The Impact of COVID-19 on Care Workers

The impact of COVID-19 has been felt by many and particularly by those working within the healthcare industry. This is due to many factors but the main one being that an on-going and suffocating burden was forced onto the backs of those working within care, with little to no support causing excessive amounts of strain and burnout.

Due to COVID-19 many closures were made as well as a reduction in support services available for both carers and individuals being supported. Even though many restrictions have been lifted and some services are now available, many carers are still left without the proper support for the impact of COVID-19 and what they have experienced during the pandemic, on both their personal lives and careers.

It's important that as a society we can find ways to help our care workers, some ideas that could help care workers include:

  • Physical, mental, and social well-being assessments
  • Face to face support
  • The need to examine the long-term impacts
  • Identifying carers as a priority group
  • Take steps towards helping carers feel safe in their roles
  • Effective support services post-pandemic

Due to the pandemic and COVID-19 there has been an increase in social isolation which left care workers with reduced support networks, lack of information, added challenges to daily activities, financial worries, and concerns of own well-being to name a few.

As a result, there is a need for urgent improvement, including plans for safe and effective ways of supporting individuals through a pandemic so that the responses we saw during this pandemic are not repeated in future ones.

Governments around the world must identify and produce ways to support their care systems and those working within it during major changes like the pandemic and COVID-19 but also all year round. This can be done if governments learn from past mistakes made during this time.

If changes are made like the ones said above, this would result in moving towards a positive global effort being made to ensure no one working or being looked after in the care industry is left in the dark again.
