Are You Getting the Most from Your Temporary Workforce?

Temporary staff can be a lifesaver during busy periods, but many services don’t realise just how much value they can get from agency workers when they’re supported well. With the right approach, agency staff can boost continuity, raise quality and even reduce pressure on your permanent team. Here’s how to do it:

Start with a Clear Briefing

A strong start sets the tone for the whole shift. Make sure staff know:

  • Who they’re supporting
  • Any risks or behaviour plans
  • Key routines
  • Who to escalate to

Pair New Workers with a Confident Team Member

Give new team members the best start by pairing them with your confident team members.

A strong buddy or mentor will:

  • Show them the basics of what each day will be like. This will include, how handovers run, what to expect during busy periods and how the team typically works together.
  • Model best practice in a natural way. Demonstrating correct communication, documentation, moving and handling etc.
  • Offer reassurance when something feels new or challenging, help the new starter build confidence without feeling judged.
  • Encourage questions and create space for honest conversations about what they’re finding easy, confusing or difficult.
  • Support them with service user preferences, which can be the hardest part for new staff to learn quickly.

A confident mentor can speed up a new worker’s settling in period, reduce anxiety and help them feel part of the team rather than an observer.

Encourage Questions Early

Temporary staff sometimes hesitate to ask for help because they don’t want to “bother” anyone. Let them know from the start that questions are welcome. It supports safety and builds trust.

Acknowledge Good Work

A simple “thank you” can boost engagement, improve retention and help build a pool of staff who genuinely want to return to your service.
