Ensure You Have a Great First Week

Ensure You Have a Great First Week

Are you starting a new job in care? Though it can feel exciting it can also feel a bit overwhelming. New routines, new faces, new expectations. If you’re preparing for your first shift or you’ve just joined a new service, here’s what you can do to make that first week feel calmer.

  • Ensure What’s Expected of You is Clear:
  • Every service runs slightly differently, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you’re unsure about a task, a policy, or who to report to, ask early. It shows that you care about getting things right, and it helps you settle in faster.

  • Take Notes to Save Time Later:
  • Your first few days will be a blur of information. Names, routines, medication times, mobility needs… it can feel like a lot. Keeping notes in a small notebook or on your phone can take the pressure off your memory while you get familiar with everything.

  • Focus on Building Trust with the People You Support:
  • You don’t need to rush. A smile, a calm approach and being consistently reliable go a long way in helping people feel safe with you. Even small things like remembering how someone likes their tea can help you build quick rapport.

  • Be Kinder to Yourself:
  • Feeling tired or mentally drained at the end of your first few shifts is completely normal. New environments demand energy. Give yourself time to rest, hydrate and reset between shifts.

  • Stay Connected with Your Agency:
  • If you’re working through Halo Staffing, we’re always here to support you. Whether you have a question about your placement, want more shifts or need advice on handling something tricky, you can reach out anytime. We want you to feel confident and supported from day one.
