One of the best things about agency work is the variety and flexibility it offers. You could be supporting people in a supported living service one day and working in a residential home the next.
That also means every shift can feel a little different. The good news is that you don’t need to know everything before you arrive.
Understanding how different services work will help you settle in more quickly and feel more confident on shift.
No Two Services Are the Same
Even if two services support people with similar needs, they may work in completely different ways.
You might notice different:
- Daily routines
- Handover processes
- Documentation systems
- Team structures
- Mealtimes
- Ways of communicating
This is completely normal.
Every service develops routines that work best for the people they support.
Take Time to Observe
When you arrive somewhere new, there’s no pressure to know every routine straight away.
One of the best things you can do is watch, listen and ask questions. Pay attention to how the team works together, how they communicate and how they support each individual.
The more you observe, the quicker everything starts to make sense.
Ask If You’re Unsure
Nobody expects an agency worker to know where everything is or how every service operates.
If you’re unsure about something, ask.
Whether it’s finding equipment, completing paperwork or checking someone’s routine, it’s always better to ask than make assumptions.
Most teams are happy to help because they want everyone to work safely and confidently.
Stay Flexible
One of the biggest strengths of agency workers is being able to adapt.
Some services are fast-paced. Others are quieter.
Some people like lots of conversation, while others prefer a calmer environment.
Being open to different ways of working will help you settle into new services more easily.
Every Shift Helps You Grow
Working in different services gives you experience that many people don’t get.
You’ll meet different teams, support people with a wide range of needs and learn new ways of working.
Over time, you’ll build confidence, develop new skills and become more adaptable.
Those experiences can make you a stronger Support Worker wherever you work in the future.
