Missing home? You’re not the only one
Moving to the UK and starting a new job in care is a big step, and it’s completely normal to miss home. Most of us have felt homesick at some point, especially in the first few days or weeks of moving. If that’s you right now, continue reading to learn what helps!
- Keep in touch, but don’t feel guilty: Try to stay connected with the people back home, whether it’s a quick call, a message, or even just sharing a photo. But don’t put pressure on yourself to be in touch all the time. You’re allowed to focus on you and your life in the UK.
- Make your space feel like yours: A photo, a scarf, your favourite drink or snack, little things from home can really help when you’re feeling far away.
- Find people who get it: Chances are, some of your colleagues are in the same boat. A quick chat on your break or sharing a meal together can go a long way. You don’t need to find a big group, just one or two friendly faces can make a big difference.
- Get to know where you live: Even if it’s just the local parl or a nice coffee spot, try to explore when you can. Finding small routines in your new area can help it feel more familiar, and more like home.
- Talk to someone if you’re struggling: You don’t have to go through it alone. If you’re finding things tough, speak to someone you trust. A colleague, your manager, a friend, anyone who makes you feel heard and can help.
Just remember, you’ve already done something challenging. Give yourself the credit you deserve.
