Pride in Every Role

Pride in Every Role

Happy Pride Month! This month is about being seen, respected, and safe at work and beyond.

Every June, people across the UK and around the world celebrate Pride Month. It’s a time to honour the history, rights, and contributions of LGBTQ+ people, but it’s also about something simple: being yourself, and being treated with respect.

Whether you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community or not, Pride Month matters in care because it’s all about inclusion, dignity, and understanding.

Almost one in four LGBTQ+ people have seen negative or discriminatory remarks from healthcare staff.

That’s according to a Stonewall survey, and it’s something many LGBTQ+ staff know all too well. Some people feel like they must hide who they are at work just to feel safe. Others worry that if they’re open, it might change how they’re treated.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, both staff and those you support. Here are a few things that help create safer, kinder spaces for everyone in care:

  • Use inclusive language: Small words can make a big difference
  • Stand up against inappropriate comments: Even a quiet “that’s not ok” shows support
  • Respect people’s pronouns and identities: Ask if you’re unsure, and listen
  • Don’t make assumptions, about someone’s partner, gender or background

Pride Month is also about celebrating the care staff who are LGBTQ+. People who show up, care deeply, and help others every day, often while carrying the weight of not always feeling fully accepted. If you’re working alongside LGBTQ+ colleagues, showing your support, listening without judgement, and standing up for inclusion, those things count.

You don’t have to march in a parade to show your support. Pride isn’t about being loud or perfect. It’s about making space for others and for yourself.

So, whether you’re out, an ally, or still figuring things out, you’re part of this story. And in care, where connection matters, that kind of understanding can change everything.
