Are you prepared for your interview? Good preparation not only helps you feel more confident, it shows potential employers that you take your role seriously.
Here’s a step by step guide to help you feel ready for your interview.
Step 1: Know the Role
Before your interview, make sure you’ve read the job description carefully, make notes if you need to. Ask yourself:
- What will be my main responsibilities?
- What kind of service does the role cover? (residential, home care, supported living etc)
- What skills or experience are the company looking for?
Top Tip:Â
Try to match your own experience with the organisations key points in their job descriptions. This will help you to prepare examples in advance. Don’t forget to do general research on the organisation as well.
Step 2: Prepare Your Answers
There are some questions that come up again and again. Practice answering these out loud:
- “Tell us about yourself”
- “Why do you want to work in care?”
- “Can you give an example of when you handled a difficult situation?”
Make sure your answers are clear and focused.
Step 3: Plan What to Ask Them
At the end of most interviews, you will be asked if you have any questions. It’s a great opportunity to show your interest in the organisation and role. Some basic questions to ask include:
- “What does a typical day look like here?”
- “What support is offered during training?”
- “How do you support staff wellbeing?”
Step 4: Get the Basics Right
- Make sure you know the time, place, and who you’re speaking to
- Dress professionally and arrive a few minutes early (or test your WIFI connection if it’s a video call)
- Bring your ID and any documents they’ve asked you for
Step 5: Reflect Afterwards
Write down how it went, what went well, what you would change if you did it again. If this interview doesn’t go your way, reflection will help you for next time.
