Tuesday, 8 February is Safer Internet Day, the theme of this year will be “all fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online.” following last year’s theme of “Together for a better internet” this day is celebrated each year to start national conversations about the importance of safety online.
Ensuring that everyone can access the internet safely is one of the main priorities of modern-day society, something that many of us don’t even think about. This day helps to work towards ensuring that young people can stay safe while online, whether that is through gaming or interacting with friends, it all matters.

Our top tips for staying safe online.
- Never share personal information online. This includes home address, passwords, driver’s license number, passport number etc.
- Make sure your internet connection is secure. If you’re online in a public area, you do not have control over their security. Therefore, it’s important to make sure your device is secure, if you’re unsure wait for a better time to access the internet.
- Choose strong passwords. This can be a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. With a mixture of both upper- and lower-case letters. This could look like, L92@Uer0ba
- Be cautious when making friends online. Not everyone online claims to be who they are so make sure the other person is able to prove it.
- Make sure you have some sort of antivirus software. Always make sure that your software is up to date as this further protects you from harm.
