It’s important that you are able to keep track of your staff’s progress while meeting regulation 18 of the health and social care act. A useful way you can do this is by setting personal development plans (PDP) for your employees.

To create personal development plans for your staff you will need to consider the following…

Keeping a record of all the skills and goals of your employees will help you to set effective personal development plans. Creating this record will allow you to work with your employees to find out how they can reach their goals using their skills and strengths.

PDPs can increase your staff’s confidence and add further motivation. PDPs also open the door to many new opportunities that can encourage growth and allow for further career progression.

Creating PDPs allows for the self-development of your employees within both their working and home lives.

In order to successfully create personal development plans with your staff you will need to first show an interest in what they are saying, to do this you can use active listening skills to engage with your employees. Ask about their life and how they are doing, make sure you’re really showing an interest and offer any help or advice that you can give, if you are unable to do so, tell them and point them in the right direction of someone who can help.

When creating a list of goals with your employees make sure you are also figuring out and making a list of what they need to do to accomplish these goals and what the process could possibly look like.

If your employees mention any courses that they are taking, make sure you show an interest in these courses and search what they are and ask about how these courses are going. Similarly, if you think there are any courses that could benefit your employees then make sure to explore those options together.

Together you can create a list of work and home life objectives, figure out whether these goals are achievable and what the time frame for these goals are and make sure you’re putting these goals in order of importance.

Make sure to ask your staff if there will be any challenges that could interfere with completing these goals and find out what steps they will take to overcome them in order to keep moving forward. Remember to track the progress of the completion of these goals, changes they made, what they found out and setbacks they encountered and what they did to overcome them.

Finally make sure you are updating the record you have created for their skills by adding in when they have progressed on their current skills or when they have discovered a new skill.
