Spotting Hidden Strengths in Your Staff Team

Spotting Hidden Strengths in Your Staff Team

Every care team has unsung heroes. However, sometimes the strengths that these team members have go unnoticed.

Taking time to look for these hidden skills can transform the way your staff team works. Maybe a care assistant has a natural ability to reassure anxious residents, or a support worker has the skill to mentor new starters. Such qualities hold teams together and recognising them boosts confidence and morale.

Here are a few ways to uncover hidden strengths:

  1. Ask Questions: In supervision, ask what parts of their role people enjoy the most, you’ll often uncover skills they didn’t realise were valuable.
  2. Watch How the Team Interacts: You’ll notice who steps up to support others or who quietly keeps the day running smoothly.
  3. Give People Chances to Show What They Can Do: Try rotating small responsibilities. It may be that you find a natural leader or trainer.

When you start recognising potential rather than only position, you’ll build a more resilient and motivated team.
