Staying Prepared – Winter Blues

Staying Prepared – Winter Blues

As the temperature continues to drop, it’s not just service users who feel the impact. Your staff team might too.

The winter blues are common across care settings. Fatigue, low motivation, and a dip in mood can creep in without anyone quite noticing.

What leaders can look out for:

  1. Staff becoming quieter or withdrawn

  1. More absences or requests to change shifts

  1. A drop in energy or enthusiasm during routines

It’s not always about workload, it could be because of light levels, reduced social time, or simply feeling run down.

Ways to support your staff team:

  • Encourage breaks in natural light where possible

  • Keep shift patterns predictable to support rest

  • Offer warm communal spaces for staff to decompress

  • Revisit wellbeing support and signpost help early
