Dr. Robert Parry, who is a paediatric surgeon, covers the scar of the children he has operated on with various drawings, asking every child or parent what they would like or surprising them with drawings based on the personalities of those he operates on. He has now drawn over 10,000 drawings after joining the hospital in 2011.
“There was a girl once who really wanted a cheeseburger, but couldn’t eat after surgery, so she woke up and found a cheeseburger drawn on her bandage – And another time, when I took a bullet out of a child, I drew a gun inside a circle with a red line across it.” Says Parry.
This is a special experience for the child and their family but also for Parry and other doctors who get to witness the joy that his drawings bring to people.
Surgery can be very stressful for everyone so when people are left surprised with seeing what illustration Parry has done next, it gives people a break, a moment to breathe and lets people see the beauty in healthcare and the life changing impacts it can have on many lives.
“During a time of stress for families, it’s nice to be able to help them smile and laugh. This is something positive that I can do for them, which is what I like most about it.”
Parry leaves people feeling happy after a triggering situation and that is so rewarding, health and social care always is.
