Time Management Tips and Skills

Managing time well is not only beneficial for your day-to-day life but also your career. Being on time allows you to stay organised and provide the best possible care to those you support. It can sometimes feel like there is too much to do, but using good time management skills can help. Here are some simple tips to make your day easier:

Plan

Every day is different, but having a plan can help. Try making a list of tasks each morning, or the night before. Write down everything that you need to do, then decide what’s the most important. This will help you stay on track and not forget anything important.

Prioritise

Not all tasks are equally urgent. Work out which ones need to be done first. For example, caring for a patient might need your immediate attention, while updating a record could wait a little longer.

Time

If you find yourself getting distracted, e.g. when getting ready to leave the house. Try setting a timer. This also works completing tasks as well.

Say No

Sometimes, you may be asked to do more than you can manage. It’s okay to say no or ask if something can wait. This helps you focus on the most important work and avoids overloading yourself.

Review

At the end of each day, take a few minutes to reflect on went well and what you could do better next time. What requires more of your attention than you initially thought?

When Things Go Wrong

Sometimes, life doesn’t go to plan. Your taxi may run late, your train is cancelled, or the bus is delayed.

If you rely on public transport, always have a backup plan. Leave the house earlier, check alternative routes.

If you find that even after using a backup plan or leaving the house earlier that you are still going to be late, let your team or manager know as soon as possible.

By using the above tips, you’ll be able to manage your tasks more easily and feel less stressed at work.
