Most employers spend less time looking at a CV than people think.
Before they’ve read every job you’ve had or every qualification you’ve gained, they’ll already be building a picture of whether you’re a good fit for the role.
That’s why making your experience clear and easy to understand is so important.
Make Your CV Easy to Read
A recruiter or hiring manager shouldn’t have to work hard to understand your experience.
Your CV should be well organised, easy to scan and highlight the information that matters most.
Simple headings, clear job descriptions and a logical layout will always work better than trying to fit everything onto the page.
Job Titles Only Tell Part of the Story
Writing Support Worker or Care Assistant tells an employer where you’ve worked, but it doesn’t tell them what you did.
Use a few short sentences to explain your role.
Think about the people you supported, the tasks you carried out and the skills you used every day.
This helps employers understand the experience you can bring to their team.
Show the Difference You Made
Rather than listing duties, explain your responsibilities in a little more detail.
For example:
Instead of: Supported service users.
Try: Supported individuals with personal care, daily routines and community activities while encouraging independence, choice and dignity.
A little more detail helps employers picture you in the role.
Don’t Forget the Skills You’ve Built
Many of the skills needed in support work can come from previous jobs or life experiences.
Think about examples where you’ve shown:
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Reliability
- Time management
- Problem-solving
- Patience
- Compassion
These are qualities employers value in almost every care setting.
Keep Your Training Up to Date
If you’ve completed training that’s relevant to care, make sure it’s included.
This could include:
- Safeguarding
- First Aid
- Moving and Handling
- Medication Awareness
- Infection Prevention and Control
If you’re currently working towards a qualification or completing online learning, include that too.
It shows you’re continuing to develop your skills.
Check the Small Things
Before sending your CV, take a few minutes to check it over.
Ask yourself:
- Is everything up to date?
- Are there any spelling mistakes?
- Is my contact information correct?
- Does it clearly explain my experience?
These simple checks can make your CV look much more professional.
