What Happens Before Your First Agency Shift?

What Happens Before Your First Agency Shift?

Starting your first agency shift is different from starting a permanent job.

Instead of spending days on an induction, you’ll usually be joining an established team that’s already caring for the people they support. Your role is to fit into that team quickly, understand what’s expected and provide safe, professional care from the moment your shift begins.

A little preparation beforehand makes the day much easier.

Before You Leave Home

Once your shift has been confirmed, take a few minutes to check the details rather than relying on memory.

Make sure you know:

  • The full address of the service
  • Your start and finish times
  • Who to report to when you arrive
  • The dress code or uniform requirements
  • Whether you need to bring photographic ID
  • Any instructions provided by Halo Staffing

If you’re travelling somewhere for the first time, check your route in advance. Factor in traffic, roadworks, parking or public transport delays. Arriving early gives you time to find reception, introduce yourself and settle in before the shift starts.

What Should You Bring?

Every service is slightly different, but it’s useful to have:

  • Your photo ID
  • Any required uniform
  • Comfortable, appropriate footwear
  • A notebook and pen if you like to make notes during handover
  • A bottle of water for your break

Avoid bringing unnecessary valuables, and make sure your phone is kept away while you’re working unless the service’s policy allows otherwise.

Your First Few Minutes Matter

When you arrive, introduce yourself and let reception or a member of staff know you’re from Halo Staffing.

Most services will give agency workers a brief handover before the shift begins. This helps you understand what’s happening that day and highlights anything important, such as changes in someone’s care needs or planned appointments.

Use this time to ask practical questions, for example:

  • Where can I find care plans?
  • Who should I report to during the shift?
  • Are there any specific risks or priorities today?
  • How do you record care notes here?

These questions show you’re engaged and want to work safely.

Every Service Has Its Own Way of Working

Whether you’re working in a residential care home, supported living service or another healthcare setting, every workplace has its own routines.

You might notice differences in:

  • Medication procedures
  • Handover formats
  • Electronic or paper care records
  • Break arrangements
  • Emergency procedures
  • Daily routines for the people being supported

What matters is listening carefully, following local procedures and asking when something isn’t clear.

Focus on Good Care, Not Being Perfect

It’s easy to spend your first shift worrying about making a mistake or trying to remember everyone’s names. Instead, focus on the fundamentals.

Introduce yourself to the people you’re supporting. Read care plans where appropriate. Communicate clearly with colleagues. If you’re unsure about a task, ask before carrying it out.

Good care isn’t about pretending to know everything. It’s about working safely, treating people with dignity and being willing to learn.

After Your Shift

Take a few minutes to reflect on how the day went.

Ask yourself:

  • What did I learn today?
  • Was there anything I found challenging?
  • Which skills do I want to develop?
  • Would I be happy to work in this setting again?

Every shift adds to your experience, whether you’re working in care homes, supported living, mental health services or another area of health and social care.

How Halo Staffing Supports New Agency Workers

Starting agency work means working in different environments, meeting new teams and adapting to different ways of working.

Our role is to make that transition as straightforward as possible by providing clear shift information, ensuring your compliance is in place and helping you prepare before you start.

If you need clarification about a booking or have a question before your shift, contact the Halo Staffing team at [email protected] or call us on 0800 368 9644. We’d much rather answer a question beforehand than have you arrive without the information you need.

Your first shift isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about arriving prepared, communicating well and providing safe, compassionate care. The rest comes with experience.
