What Should You Do If You’re Unsure About a Task on Shift?

What Should You Do If You’re Unsure About a Task on Shift?

You’ve just arrived at work, the shift is moving quicker than usual and someone asks you how to handle a task or use a piece of equipment you’ve never seen before.

Do you wing it and hope for the best or do you stop everything?

Firstly, never guess when you’re dealing with someone’s care or safety. Feeling a bit out of your depth doesn’t mean you aren’t cut out for the job; it just means you’re human. The real test of a great support worker isn’t knowing the answer to everything, it’s knowing what to do when you don’t know.

Here is how you handle those nerve-wracking moments without losing your cool:

First, if a task carries any risk of discomfort or harm, step back. Rushing leads to mistakes and taking thirty seconds to breathe and figure things out is always better than rushing into something blind.

Next, look around you. Every care home or supported living service has a paper trail for a reason. Dive into the care plan or risk assessment folder. Nine times out of ten, the exact step-by-step instructions you need are written right there in black and white.

If the paperwork doesn’t clear it up, turn to the people around you. Find a senior staff member or manager. Speak up and say, “I just wanted to double check the protocol for this – could you show me the preferred way to do it here?” Far from looking incompetent, asking questions shows that you genuinely care about doing things right. Permanent staff would rather answer a quick question any day of the week than deal with an avoidable incident later.

And remember, if the site is stretched thin or you feel genuinely unsafe carrying out a specific duty, call us on 0800 368 9644. We are here to clear any confusion and make sure you feel fully supported.

Uncertainty is just a part of stepping into new environments. How you handle it is what makes you a trusted professional.
