Most people feel out of their depth at some point in care work. It might be a new setting, an unfamiliar task, a busy shift, or a situation you have not dealt with before.
Feeling this way does not mean you are failing. It usually means you care about doing the job correctly. What matters most is how you respond.
1. Pause and stay calm
Take a moment to breathe and focus on what is happening right now. Panicking can make things feel bigger than they are. Ask yourself:
- Is anyone in immediate danger?
- What needs attention first?
- Who can support me?
2. Ask for help early
You do not need to manage everything alone. Speak to a senior on shift, manager or and experienced colleague. Asking for support is a strength not a weakness.
It is always better to ask early than struggle in silence.
3. Stay within your training
If you are asked to something you are not trained or authorised to do, speak up. You can say:
- “I haven’t been trained in that.”
- “Can someone guide me through this.”
- “I’m not confident to do that safely alone.”
Protecting service users and yourself always comes first.
4. Focus on one task at a time
Busy shifts can feel overwhelming when everything comes at once. Try to:
- Prioritise urgent tasks first
- Break jobs into smaller steps
- Avoid rushing
One clear step is better than five rushed ones.
5. Reflect after the shift
Once the shift ends, think about what made you feel out of depth. Was it:
- Lack of information?
- A new environment?
- Not enough support?
- Something you need more training in?
This helps you grow in confidence for next time.
