Most shifts start exactly as you’d expect.
You arrive, receive a handover and get into the routine of the day.
Sometimes though, you might arrive and realise things are a little different. The service is busier than expected, someone has called in sick or the people you’re supporting have different needs to what you imagined.
If that happens, don’t panic. It’s something every experienced Support Worker has faced at some point.
Take a Few Minutes to Get Your Bearings
When you arrive somewhere new, there can be a lot of information to take in.
Rather than rushing straight in, use the handover to understand what’s happening that day.
Listen carefully, take note of any important information and don’t be afraid to ask someone to repeat something if you’ve missed it.
Those first few minutes can make the rest of your shift much easier.
It’s Fine to Ask Questions
You aren’t expected to know every routine as soon as you walk through the door.
If you’re unsure about something, ask.
You might need to check:
- A person’s usual routine.
- Where equipment is kept.
- What your responsibilities are.
- Which tasks should be prioritised.
Most teams would much rather answer a question than have someone guess.
Focus on What You Know
If a shift feels busier than expected, start with the tasks you’re confident completing.
As you become more familiar with the service, you’ll naturally build confidence in the rest of the routine.
You don’t have to know everything immediately.
You’re Part of a Team
Even if you’re the only agency worker on shift, you’re never expected to work completely on your own.
The permanent staff know the people they support and understand how the service runs.
Working together, asking for guidance and keeping each other updated helps the whole shift run more smoothly.
If Something Doesn’t Feel Right
Sometimes, a situation may leave you feeling unsure or uncomfortable.
If that happens, don’t ignore it.
Speak to the senior member of staff on duty and explain your concerns.

Every Shift Builds Your Confidence
One of the biggest advantages of agency work is the variety.
Every service you work in teaches you something different.
Over time, you’ll become more confident walking into new environments, meeting new teams and adapting to different ways of working.
Many experienced agency workers say that’s where they learned the most.
You’re Not Expected to Know Everything
No matter how long you’ve worked in care, there will always be situations you’ve never come across before.
That’s completely normal.
The important thing isn’t having every answer.
It’s staying calm, communicating with the people around you and being willing to learn.
Those are the qualities that help Support Workers succeed, whatever the shift brings.
