When Did Your Team Last Feel Proud of Their Work?

When Did Your Team Last Feel Proud of Their Work?

In care services, conversations often focus on what needs fixing, such as, incidents, staffing gaps, compliance, complaints, tasks that still need completing and the list goes on. While these things matter, only hearing about problems can change the working environment over time.

People might stop noticing what is going well and only what is going wrong. Pride in work is important and the lack of it could cause a much larger issue.

Pride in work is important because it affects:

  • Motivation
  • Confidence
  • Team morale
  • Retention

Staff who feel valued are more likely to stay engaged, support others and maintain standards during difficult periods.

This does not mean ignoring issues or praising people constantly. It means recognising good practice when it happens. That could be:

  • A staff member handling a difficult situation calmly
  • Strong teamwork during a busy shift
  • Someone showing patience and kindness under pressure
  • Improvements in communication or consistency

Small recognition often has more impact than leaders realise. It’s also worth asking:

  • Do staff only hear feedback when something goes wrong?
  • Are positive moments being noticed as much as problems?
  • Does the team feel their work is seen?

As you know, in demanding services, people can quickly move from one task to the next without stopping to recognise progress.

If you couldn’t answer these questions positively, going forward you could try:
  1. Giving specific feedback rather than general comments
  2. Recognising effort during difficult shifts, not just outcomes
  3. Making time in handovers or meetings to acknowledge what went well
  4. Following up when teams have handled pressure well, not only when concerns are raised

Over time, this can help staff feel noticed rather than managed. Long-term pressure care also makes positive culture harder to maintain, especially when teams are stretched or constantly covering gaps. Reliable staffing support can ease some of that pressure and create more stability across the service.
