Vaccine Inequity
2022 new year resolutions of The World Health Organisation started off with a recap on the plan to vaccinate 70% of people in every country. As well as making sure all countries have access to breakthrough treatments, as well as reliable tests. Ghebreyesus also noted that vaccine inequity and health inequity have possibly been the biggest failure over the previous year. With many countries with still little to no access of even having the opportunity for a vaccine.
“Vaccine inequity is a killer of people and jobs, and it undermines a global economic recovery.”
COVID-19 cases
The waves of cases from the newest variant Omicron continue to have a huge impact on healthcare systems globally, adding more unwanted stress and pressure.
Hospitals around the world are becoming overcrowded and understaffed.
It is also clear that vaccines greatly help those working in healthcare as they greatly reduce hospitalisation and death from COVID-19. Therefore, taking away some of the added pressure which COVID-19 has brought us all.
How must we turn things around?
In this speech, Ghebreyesus highlights the importance of vaccine equality and the right that all countries have for a vaccine. During the end of 2021 supply increased but still has a way to go. It is crucial that vaccine manufactures make sure that they are also accessible to the poorest nations not just the wealthiest. No change will be made unless we all can move forward and work as one on ways to promote health around the world.
Ghebreyesus has said that some countries have provided blueprints on ways to make this possible. Which includes, ways they can be mass produced quickly and effectively given to all countries.
He carried on saying that WHO will continue to invest in vaccine manufacturing hubs and work with any manufacturers who are willing to share their technology and licenses when it comes to mass producing vaccines.
