Offering a space for others and yourself is extremely important, especially when working in care. Below you will find ways to better understand others that you can take with you on your care journey.
The first step to understanding others needs always starts with good communication and great listening skills. However, it’s two-way relationship. As said by Action for Happiness, “it involves one person expressing what they have to say and the other person listening.”
At times working in care can be stressful, therefore understanding the needs of others will help you reach any shared goals between you and the people you’re supporting. It will also help you to develop stronger bonds, including the ones made with your co-workers. To understand the needs of others you will always have to ask. This can include questions as simple as “what are your needs?” to more specific questions like, “How can I help/support you today?” the list of suitable questions to ask is endless and by asking these questions, you’ll soon notice an improvement in your ability to care and the happiness of those you are supporting.
The needs of the people you are supporting won’t always look the same so make sure you’re always prepared to act on what someone tells you.
Understanding the needs of others is a crucial life skill and as you notice yourself developing this skill, you’ll notice your ability to work with others start to increase. Not only is this important in care but as you go through life.
As said by SkillsYouNeed, people who are good at understanding others can:
- Pick up emotional cues
- Listen well to what people are saying
- Show sensitivity towards others
- Help other people appropriately
Understanding others is not something people should run away from but instead lean into. If you have this skill, you’ll make a great carer, and we’d love to see you join the team.
