World Braille Day

World Braille Day

Ever since 2019 World Braille Day has been celebrated around the world on January 4, this day is intended to spread awareness on the importance of Braille as a means of communication. A system of raised dots that can be read using your fingers. Feeling the shape of the dots to determine the words.

Braille was first used in 1854 in France, 2 years after the death of the inventor, Louis Braille who was born on January 4 1806 in France and lost his sight at the age of 3. He was later sent to the Royal Institution for Blind Youth where he was first made familiar with the system used by soldiers to send and receive messages without making a sound. After learning about this system at the age of 15 he began to create his own form of communication for blind people, finding 63 ways to use a six dot cell.

Now used around the world by blind and partially sighted people to communicate.
