Most people who work in care are used to putting other people first.
You arrive for your shift ready to support someone else. You help solve problems, adapt when plans change and do your best to make sure the people you support have a good day.
What often gets forgotten is that you’re a person too.
Your energy, your wellbeing and your mental health matter just as much.
Not Every Shift Feels the Same
Some shifts fly by and others seem to throw everything at you.
You might be supporting someone through a difficult day, covering for a colleague, travelling between services or simply feeling more tired than usual.
That’s part of working in health and social care. It’s normal to have days where you leave work feeling drained.
Feeling Tired Doesn’t Mean You’re Not Good at Your Job
It’s common for Support Workers to put pressure on themselves to give 100% all the time. However, everyone has better days that others.
Feeling tired after several long shifts doesn’t mean you’re not committed.
Having a difficult day doesn’t mean you’re in the wrong career.
It means you’re human.
The important thing is recognising when you need to slow down and recharge so that it doesn’t affect the quality of care you are providing.
Recovery Is Part of the Job
Think about what helps you feel like yourself again after work.
For some people it’s going to the gym, reading a book, listening to music, spending time with family, watching a film, walking the dog or getting an early night.
There isn’t a right answer.
Finding time to switch off helps you come back feeling more focused for your next shift.
It’s Okay to Speak Up
If you’re struggling with your workload, unsure about something or finding a situation difficult, don’t keep it to yourself.
Talking to your manager or the Halo Staffing team doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re asking for support when you need it. This is something a good Support Worker does every day for the people they care for.
You deserve that support too. If you ever need support, contact a member of our friendly team on 0800 368 9644 or email [email protected]
Small Habits Make a Big Difference
Looking after yourself doesn’t have to mean making huge lifestyle changes.
Sometimes it’s the little things that help most.
- Eating before a long shift
- Taking your break if you’re able to
- Drinking enough water
- Getting enough sleep between shifts
- Planning time to do something you enjoy on your days off
These simple habits can help you feel more prepared for the week ahead.
