Attracting and Keeping the Right People

Attracting and Keeping the Right People

Staff shortages are nothing new in health and social care, and bringing someone new into your team is always a big step. Recruitment and retention go hand in hand and how you welcome and support staff in their first few weeks can make all the difference.

Make a strong start:

  1. Clear introduction – A well-structured introduction to the role, service users, and expectations builds confidence and reduces uncertainty.

  1. Mentorship – Pairing new staff with experienced colleagues can help them feel supported and integrated.

  1. Regular check ins – Informal catch ups in the early weeks can prevent small worries from becoming big problems.

Having a strong welcome is great but keeping that momentum going is what matters most. Offering opportunities for learning, recognising achievements, and encouraging open communication all help new starters feel valued and part of the team. When staff feel supported and see a future in your organisation, they’re far more likely to stay.

Sometimes it helps to take a step back and reflect:

  • What does our workplace look like to a new starter?

  • Do we give staff clear development pathways so they see a future here?

  • Are exit interviews telling us something we need to act on?

Bringing in the right people is important, but keeping them is what builds a stable, skilled and motivated team.
