Bullying in the NHS

Bullying in the NHS

A report by the NHS Trust has been released and the government has said that their findings include bullying and blame culture within the NHS. This report has also found that the way mangers are trained and valued is unacceptable and damaging.

A now on-going problem within the NHS is the way people are treated. The only way to tackle this issue is by addressing the issues and making active changes to ensure that the bullying is stopped. Luckily, the reviews recommendations are in full support by Sajid Javid.

These recommendations include:

  • Action to improve equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Clear routes to progression and promotion
  • A simplified appraisal system to focus on how people have behaved, not just what they have achieved
  • The development of consistent management standards through accredited training
  • Encouraging leaders and managers who are good for the position to take on the most difficult roles, so they are seen as “the best jobs rather than the most featured jobs”

20% of all NHS staff have reported that they have been bullied within the workplace and Sajid Javid has said to MPs that, “The NHS is absolutely fantastic, we all rely on it, but much of how it’s set up is a still very much 1948, we need to be thinking about 2048 and how we get from here to the needs of the British population when it comes to health in 2048.”
