Overcoming Bad Days at Work

Overcoming Bad Days at Work

When we experience a bad day at work it can be difficult to get into the mindset which is why finding ways to overcome bad days at work is incredibly important. Below you will be able to find out some ways that others have said to be helpful and find out more on why separating work and home life is crucial in maintaining a healthy balance.

Separating work from home life

When we are unable to separate work and home life it becomes easy to carry any negative emotions associated with work life into your home life and vice versa. Any stress that we may feel at work can easily be brought home and can slowly start to affect each aspect of our lives with no clear understanding of where this stress came from unless we are able to identify what at work is causing this stress. A great way to make sure you are separating work and home life is by finding ways to continue after a bad day at work. These options will also work if you have experienced a bad day at home too.

What can I do to overcome bad days?

Do something you enjoy – Find an activity to act as a reset. Ask yourself the following questions.

  • What is a healthy activity that you enjoy doing?
  • What hobbies do you have?
  • How could a hobby or activity help you overcome a bad day at work?

The most common activity people turn to when they have experienced a bad day is music. Music helps many express their emotions so that they are able to understand them better and can continue to move forward with their day and life. Although music is not always an option for everyone. Some other activities to think about are:

  • Watching a film or a TV show
  • Taking a warm or cold shower or bath
  • Take part in your favourite sport
  • Go for a run or walk
  • Draw or paint
  • Dance or sing
  • Read
  • Make your favourite meal
  • Learn something new

These are just a few options, but the list is endless. Maybe you could even benefit from creating your own list of activities and hobbies you have, add any activities or hobbies that help to ground you and allows you to focus.

Get outside – Getting outside and surrounding yourself with nature is one of the best ways you can ground yourself and process how you are feeling after a challenging day at work. Getting outside could mean going for a run, walking or other forms of exercise but it can also be just sitting by yourself outside.

Being outside allows us to stay present, however it’s not always easy which is why finding ways to make it enjoyable is crucial. Some of the activities listed in the “do something you enjoy” section can easily be done outside.

Connect with others – When we have a bad day a lot of people like to turn to those they trust, maybe you are one of these people. Whether that is speaking with someone who allows you to be open about your emotions or just being in the presence of someone else makes you feel better.

You could even try connecting with people, you could do this by finding a group that is formed around an interest that is shared.

Talk or write about how you feel – A good way to relieve stress or other negative emotions associated with having a bad day at work is to talk or write about the way you are feeling.

You could talk about how you are feeling with a family member, friend or anyone else that you are close with. You could even talk about how you are feeling with a mental health professional such as a therapist.

Remember therapy is not just for people who have mental health illnesses or those in a crisis. It can be for anyone. Life can be difficult and overwhelming for everyone so having a place you can go to speak openly about how your day has been is great! Learning about how you respond to your working environment and how to reflect on this is something everyone should take advantage of if possible.

You can also write about the emotions you are feeling after a bad day at work, this allows you to let them leave your mind so that you are able to overcome the bad day you have had and any future ones. Make a list of what went well.

Treat yourself – Is there something that you’ve wanted to buy which you’ve had your eyes on for a while? Maybe it’s time to do so.

Treating yourself every once in a while, is something that can help you overcome bad work days by rewarding yourself for just getting through the day and carrying on. Don’t forget that, that is a big achievement in itself.

Don’t let yourself become defined by what has happened at work or at home, remember that it’s normal to feel the way you’re feeling when experiencing a bad day.

You can even create a habit out of any of the categories listed in this article so that you have the skills to clear your mind and overcome all present and future bad days at work. In need of further support? Continue HERE
