The Rising Cost of Living: What it Means for Your Care Team

It’s no secret that the cost of living has crept back up in recent months. According to the latest figures, UK consumer price inflation (CPI) rose to 3.8% in July 2025, marking the highest level in over 18 months. Food prices have climbed by 4.2%, with essentials like butter, eggs and chocolate seeing the biggest rises.

For many households, those numbers translate into harder choices: paying more for basics like bread, milk, and fresh fruit, while wages in social care often struggle to keep pace. For care leaders, this reality can show up in the workplace.

Why it matters in care settings

When people are under financial pressure, it doesn’t stay at home. Anxiety, fatigue, and low morale can become present at work. For staff teams in health and social care the added stress can affect focus, resilience, and ultimately the quality of care delivered to service users.

What leaders can do

While as a leader you can’t control the economy, you can take steps to soften the impact for your staff team.

  • Open the conversation: Sometimes staff won’t speak up about money worries, but creating space to talk can help reduce stigma and isolation.
  • Review rotas and overtime fairly: Giving staff the chance to boost their hours (if they want to) or making sure overtime is shared equally can make a difference.
  • Highlight available support: Many aren’t aware of local schemes, from food banks to financial advice services or even staff discounts. A simple poster can help with this.
  • Invest in wellbeing: Flexible shifts, counselling services or even small morale-boosting gestures.

Inflation pressures are expected to continue into autumn, with projections suggesting CPI could reach 4% in September. Leaders who pay attention to their team’s financial stress will not only support wellbeing but also strengthen retention at a time when every staff member counts.
