Working in care means facing unknown situations that can sometimes be challenging and stressful. Therefore, looking after yourself is extremely important. There's always steps to be taken so that we can better understand ourselves and the ways we react. Focusing on ourselves and being vulnerable can sometimes feel like a personal attack but it only helps us better understand one another, which is a necessary and key life skill.
So, what steps can you take to work towards 'improving' yourself?
A lot of people can get stuck browsing on social media or on their phones, which is why trying a digital detox, even if it only lasts a short time, could benefit you immensely.
What to do instead of going on your phone after a busy day of work?
- Go on a walk and connect with nature
- Spend time doing something you like that doesn't involve your phone, for example reading or painting
- Spend time with loved ones
Another step to take is to talk to yourself kindly, you'd never think of saying the cruel things you say to yourself to someone you love. Try focusing on the positives that happened to you during the day, as well as the positives about yourself.
When we constantly tell ourselves something negative, we start to believe it and we then become our bad thoughts, we block ourselves from working towards self-improvement.
Eating healthy and getting enough sleep can also help towards 'improving' yourself. Making sure you listen to what your body needs and when it needs it is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. By doing this, it gives you a chance to check in with both your physical and mental health.
Don't hold onto grudges. Engaging in self-care means being able to forgive others and yourself. It can be easy to hold on to the past and mistakes that were made during that time. Thinking about the past and any mistakes can drastically drain your energy and put you in a bad mood. Holding onto that pain and negativity can hurt everyone. Don't forget that all that matters is the present moment, the past is the past and it is there for a reason.
Practice acts of kindness. Just one small act of kindness can go a long way, being kind to others not only boosts their mood but yours as well. Being kind can help give you a sense of purpose and allow you to feel less isolated.
Practice gratitude. You can do this by keeping a journal, writing down three things you're grateful for first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. Another thing you can do to work towards self-improvement is write about your day or anything that is on your mind. By acknowledging all of this, you can get relief from all the stress and pressure that it was bringing to your life.
Finally, speak to those you trust. Don't let everything build up, spend time with people who make you feel good and less time with those who don't.
By following these steps you'll be able to gradually work your way towards self-improvement so that you can improve your life and those you care for. Give yourself permission for a fresh start. Help yourself and better understand those you care for.
