Some shifts feel straightforward from the start and others don’t.
You arrive, and things already feel slightly unsettled. The handover is rushed, the team is stretched, or you’re stepping into a setting that works a little differently to what you’re used to.
That can be enough to knock your confidence, especially if you’re trying to make a good impression or settle into a new environment.
It’s a familiar experience in care work.
Even experienced staff can find themselves in situations where things don’t feel clear straight away. The difference is often in how those moments are handled.
A few things that tend to help are:
- Take a moment to get your bearings
Even on a busy shift, a short pause to understand priorities can make everything feel more manageable. What needs attention first? What can wait? - Ask questions early
It’s always easier to ask at the start than to try and work things out under pressure later. Most teams would rather support you early than fix something afterwards. - Be clear about what you’re confident with
Every setting is slightly different. It’s okay to say if you haven’t done something before or need guidance. - Focus on one thing at a time
When everything feels urgent, it’s easy to rush. Slowing down just enough to complete one task properly often makes the rest of the shift feel more in control.
It’s also worth remembering that you’re not expected to know everything straight away.
Good teams understand that new or temporary staff need a bit of orientation, even if it’s just a few minutes at the start of a shift.
Where that support is in place, the whole shift tends to feel different.
At Halo Staffing, we work with services that understand the importance of supporting staff properly on shift — not just expecting them to step in and manage alone, because when you feel supported, you’re far more likely to do your job well and even the more challenging shifts start to feel manageable.
