In many countries, the short days of winter are thought to cause lethargy and low mood, resulting in “seasonal affective disorder” (SAD).
What is SAD?
Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons. Most symptoms of SAD start in autumn and carry on into the winter months. SAD is not the same as “winter blues” so don’t just brush it off.
Symptoms of SAD
- Feeling hopeless, worthless, or guilty
- Feeling sad or down, almost all the time
- Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
- Oversleeping
- Appetite changes
- Having thoughts of not wanting to live
- Tiredness or low energy
You can take multiple steps to keep your mood steady throughout the year, there are also treatment options such as, light therapy, psychotherapy, and medications.
Instead of telling yourself things like, “there are many things to dislike about winter” try saying, “winter brings many wonderful seasonal changes.” Changing your mindset from positive to negative.
