Every September, World Alzheimer’s Month shines a light on dementia, not only on the challenges it brings but also on the difference that good care can make. This year’s theme, “Never Too Early, Never Too Late”, is a reminder that no matter your role or experience, your actions and compassion can make a real difference.
What the theme means for you
Even as care staff, your presence matters. Whether you’re working with someone newly diagnosed or whose dementia has progressed, the kindness and understanding you offer are vital.
Simple ways to respond to the theme
- Be curious and observant – notice when a person’s behaviour or routines start to shift; early observations can lead to better responses
- Take stigma out of the conversation – ask questions. Encourage colleagues to do the same. The more we talk openly, the more we help reduce fear and isolation
- Keep the environment dementia aware – Clear signage, soft lighting, and familiar gestures matter. Even small adjustments in your approach can make someone’s day feel steadier
- Respect timing – sometimes, telling someone it’s a good time to engage or gently postponing is an important as what you say
- Learn and share – if someone you support learns a new way to communicate or expresses themselves differently, that’s worth celebrating and passing on
Why it matters now
The theme encourages action at all stages. It reminds us that awareness and care are relevant when someone starts showing signs of dementia. Learn how to recognise the signs HERE!
