We will begin this course with the description of dementia and the importance of gaining awareness about it.
The next section will inform you about the types, signs, progression and stages of dementia.
Having done that, we will describe what is delirium and list some of the symptoms associated with it.
We will then explain to you what is the difference between dementia and delirium.
The next section will explore how dementia impacts an individual’s willingness to engage with others.
At this point we will list all the relevant legislations and the legal framework in the UK.
This will be followed by a section which will explore the physical, psychological and emotional problems faced by people with dementia.
The next section will educate you about the issues around their wellbeing and quality of life.
Here, we will explain why people with dementia present certain behaviours, what triggers them and which strategies to use to de-escalate them.
The next section will be about strategies and skills required to effectively communicate with people living with dementia.
We will then inform you how to deliver person-centred care to an individual with dementia.
Here we will also cover administration of medication to those individuals using a person-centred approach.
The following section will explain how to use evidence-based interventions to address cognitive and functional decline in people with dementia.
Having done that, we will inform you how to maintain dignity, empower the individuals to make choices and maintain independence as much as possible.
Ethical considerations in decision-making and capacity assessment, will be the focus of the next section.
At this point we will educate you about the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care.
The next section will explain how to develop empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity in dementia care practice.
Finally, we will describe how to design meaningful activities to improve the engagement of individuals with advanced dementia.
